to Indian Pioneer Interviews! HOLCOMB BURIAL GROUND INTERVIEW # 4411 DAVIS, JAMES M. (MR.) Thad SMITH, Jr. Interviewer June 15, 1937 Interview with Mr. James M. DAVIS What is now known as the Holcomb Cemetery, belonged to the Chickasaw and Choctaw Indians; and, from what I hear, it still does. When the Chickasaws and Choctaws sold their surplus land, they reserved five or more acres, wherever there were graves. Mary L. MCKINNEY was the first person buried there, which was December 14, 1886. She was a Caddo girl, and her grandfather, James M. DAVIS, selected the burial ground. At that time, everybody thought the burial ground was in Caddo country, but after the Government surveyed the land, it was found to be in the Chickasaw Nation, one mile and three quarters east of the Caddo east line. The burial ground is located four miles northwest of Chickasha on the north side of the Washita River on a hill. Note: Mary L. MCKINNEY was a daughter of Sarah Ann DAVIS MCKINNEY, who later married Thad SMITH, Sr. and was the mother of Thad, the interviewer.
